Synthesis and investigation of some new biodegradable polymers based on polylactic acid used in medicine
OBJECTIVES
  • to analyze the mechanic and elastic properties of the new biopolymers synthesized and their comparison with the polymers used as standard compounds (polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or polyurethanes);
  • to study the properties of degradation and biodegratation of the new synthesised compounds in accordance with the foresights of ASTM standard D 6400-99 (Guide for assessing the Compostability of Environmentally Degradable Plastics).
DESCRIPTION The project aims the synthesis and parametric study of polycondensation of lactic acid (2-hydroxi propanoic acid) raceme (D,L) and of the enatiomer L; as well as some mixtures of lactic acid raceme and enantiomer L with some new thermoplastic and elastic properties applied in medicine. The polycondensation reaction will be performed as non catalytic reaction at temperature between 100-300 degrees C, without catalysts or through conditions of microwave synthesis. The polycondensation conditions for obtaining the dimer of lactic acid (lactides) raceme and stereoisomer through polymerization with ring opening will be studied. The polylactic acid is considered a “hard” material from the point of view of polymer-chemistry, we propose the introduction of a monomer such as diphenyl-methyl-diisocyanate and/or ethylene glycol in this polymeric chain, with the aim of obtaining new copolymers with new properties and applications. In the literature of this field of study there are data about the use of polyethylene or polypropylene glycols and polyurethanes as “softening reagents”. The forming of the oligomers and copolymers of multi-block type, the molecular mass and properties of the obtained polymers will be studied with specific methods: SEC chromatography and modern methods of spectrometry, NMR, IR, MALDI MS. The polymerization mechanisms will be studied in function of the structure and stereochemistry of the monomers or dimers.
